So after hearing the new iPhone update was going to be released today I was happy. But I was filled with so much anticipation. Steve Jobs never mentioned anything about Windows 64 bit compatibility.

So I updated my iPhone firmware on a 32 bit machine. Then proceded to update iTunes on my 64 bit machine. (I hacked the current 7.5 version to work on my 64 bit-it was easy not really a hack) So as I went to the Apple site to upgrade to 7.6 I noticed that something said it was compatible with 64 bit machines. This was great I thought, my itunes wiill now officially work with my Windows Vista 64 bit machine but what I really hope for is the iPhone to work too.

Well, guess what? It did. The iPhone has some really cool new features and it now works with 64 bit versions of Windows operating systems. Well, I have only tried it with Vista Ultimate 64 and none others. Not sure about XP. If someone has XP x64, and the iPhone, please leave a reply.

  • yea. definitely doesn’t work on x64. you get a lovely error asking you to connect it to a computer running vista or 32 bit xp. exciting right?

  • If you install the newest version of iTunes on your 64 bit machine, I think Apple detected my 64 bit with ie or firefox, it will work. You must also update your iPhone to the newest version 1.1.3 but I did that from a 32 bit machine. You may have to update the iphone on 32 bit but once you do that, you iphone will sync with your 64 bit machine. I did this in Vista, I assume XP would work as well.

  • the firmware on my phone was updated last week. i did a fresh install of x64 yesterday and it’s not picking it up.

    Windows Requirements

    * 32-bit editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Vista
    * 64-bit editions of Windows Vista

notice how x64 isn’t on there

  • That really stinks! x64 means 64-bit, what 64 bit version of Windows are you using? XP?

  • Wow, thanks for letting everyone know. XP 64-bit is not natively supported with the iPhone.
